Concept of Shadowplay Release is simple - in Russia at present there are about 4 major-metal labels which are initially metal ones that think only about profit of one or another project. As a result many fans of goth music couldn’t find here in RUSSIA qualitative bands and only buy the products of the majors... Shadowplay positions itself as the first dark-music record label in Russia, concentrating for many genres such gothic electro, gothic rock, dark wave, ethereal, dark ambient and other...

We try to change the situation and we want to inform first of all the real fans but not the "consumers". One of the primary factors for us is the fact that many releases in Russia are illegal. And it is so important for us to resist to pirates. Unfortunately we could not pay much enough for the license, but we pursue interests of the authors...

However there is also other variant when the Russian pirates will reprint yours production in a poor quality. In that situation it would be very difficult to resist to all this here. First of all we're interested in acquainting our audience with new music.

Probably it is necessary to explain the reasons of such popularity of the piracy releases in Russia. The motivations of purchases of piracy editions by Russian buyers are the following: the low living level of the average Russian fan. Especially in remote places (150$ in a month in average). The licensed CDs today cost $4-5 (for example Covenant, Clan of Xymox, Mission UK, Diary of Dreams, Switchblade Symphony etc.). However piracy CDs cost even more cheaply - 1-2$ (for example Ataraxia’s “Ad Perpetuam Rei Memoriam” was sold here for 1$). Besides the piracy releases frequently appear before official date of release.

Many buyers in Russia have money but have no opportunity to buy original CDs:
a) The Internet services refuse to accept payments from Russia
b) The postage surpasses the cost of the release in several times
c) Russian mail is out of any criticism - there are lots of cases when disks are lost or come broken...

There is a number of other fine details including promotion and mass-media, however we’ve tried to designate the basic. The one way to develop indie music in Russia and to struggle with piracy is the official cooperation with labels that will allow us not only to acquaint Russian fans with new interesting music but also to protect interests of the authors from piracy encroachments in Russia.

Now we have made legal base for our activity and we can assert yours interests in Russia and resist to pirates. We will try to inform you about most of the non-licensed releases in Russia.
